Participation of social workers within child and youth care is investigated within the labour-sociological sub-project of geste. With a focus on social workers’ opportunities to influence their work environment and conditions, this research is conducted in a bi-national comparison of the German and English case.
Participation of professionals in the assistance for education
Participation is essential in the daily work of social workers with children and young people. The clients of aids for upbringing should be “empowered” and get access to supportive structures. At the same time, little is known about the influence of social workers’ participation on their labour process. Which access do the employees have? Which design parameters are applied? What implications does this aspect of participation have for work in stationary child and youth care? In order to answer these questions, the labour-sociological subproject of geste will proceed in two-steps.
In order to get an overview of the field, experts (e.g. trade union representatives, executive management, employees of the youth welfare office) from Germany and England are currently interviewed about structural aspects. These expert interviews will be completed and evaluated by the end of the year 2020.
The employee survey will start in the beginning of 2021. The employees will be interviewed about their subjective approaches, perspectives and strategies to their participation opportunities.
Qualitative interviews are conducted for both steps and evaluated accordingly in a qualitative paradigm.
